Automotive and marine engine block casting company Atlantis Foundries has unveiled its 13.5 MW embedded solar generation project, which will help to improve energy security and cost efficiency and lower carbon emissions.

The system is engineered, financed, built and operated by industrial energy utility engineering company Energy Partners. It is designed to generate more than 20 000 MWh/y, providing up to 20% of the foundry’s energy needs and generating electricity worth more than R35-million a year at current Eskom tariffs.

“This project strengthens our resilience and ensures we remain globally competitive. We could not have done it alone,” says Atlantis Foundries CEO Pieter du Plessis.

Atlantis Foundries, which is based in the Atlantis Special Economic Zone in Cape Town, accounts for 2% of South Africa's exports under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act and 4% of South Africa’s trade with the EU, he highlights.

The system comprises more than 20 000 panels and will also save more than 21 000 t/y of CO2 emissions.

This reduction in emissions is a critical strategic move in response to the increasing international pressure faced by South African exporters to comply with stricter carbon border tariffs, environmental, social and governance requirements, and sustainability directives, particularly from the EU, the US and other developed markets, he adds.

“By embracing embedded solar generation, Atlantis Foundries is reducing grid dependence and enhancing resilience. This project is a blueprint for energy-intensive manufacturers looking to mitigate the risks of South Africa’s continuing energy crisis,” says Energy Partners CEO Manie de Waal.

South African businesses need to take charge of their energy future. Large manufacturers can secure their own power, reduce costs and meet international sustainability standards as part of the energy transition, he adds.
